Be Water - Adapt!

"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." ― Bruce Lee

Amateur (HAM) Radio

Learn amateur radio and get your license. Going back to one of our first blog posts about learning STEM and the importance of those disciplines, amateur radio is a phenomenal way to keep learning STEM topics, improve your state of preparedness, and is a great social activity.  Whether you just use a handheld (H/T) radio, or setup a base station / home base / “ham shack” with a full on house antenna, amateur radio is a great hobby! You can get started learning more at:  https://hamstudy.org/ https://www.youtube.com/c/HamRadioCrashCourse https://www.kb6nu.com/study-guides/

First Aid and Casualty Care

Medical training and individual first aid is often overlooked, but is important to know. Whether it’s an everyday boo-boo or life threatening injury resulting from an accident, first aid can save lives if you know it! Think of the scenarios of injury yourself with a knife in the kitchen, or witnessing a car accident, with casualty care knowledge, you can save a life or many lives.  There are also schools of thought that if you know how to defend yourself, you should be able to save a life. It’s more than knowing basic first aid like CPR, and how to use an AED. It’s also about assessing the scene, all the way to Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) knowledge.  Build a vehicle response trauma kit (one that you keep in your vehicle), as well as an IFAK (individual first aid kit) that you carry. It’s one thing to carry the proper equipment, it’s another thing to know how to use it. So make sure you seek out training! I’ll say it again, many skills need to be trained, including Fi...

Bushcraft and Homesteading

Learn bushcraft skills. They are very useful, unique, and add a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Bushcraft skills span learning how to safely and properly use a knife, building shelters, tying knots, starting fires, navigation, using plants, protecting nature and much more. Of course, it is also about learning to survive in the wilderness.  Homesteading is the concept of being self-sufficient, and is a vast topic to dive into. Some of the homesteading lifestyle skills and knowledge to learn are gardening and home food preservation. It’s amazing to be able to plant, grow, and eat your own food. All these skills grow your confidence, improve self-reliance, and help with being prepared! Go look for some survival, bushcraft, or wilderness education schools near you!  And check out this blog post with great books on these subjects: Books to Read, Reread, and Practice

TIME: the need to optimize the scarcest resource

Time is the scarcest resource of all. Our time is limited. With all the things to learn in life, what are some protips to optimize time to learn? Find out a few below! Instead of listening to music during the drive to and from work, working out, mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, or other chores, choose to optimize your time by listening to podcasts or audiobooks while doing these activities. I’m not saying to give up listening to music. Music is the universal language and plays an important part of life! Just recognize the opportunity to learn through some multitasking.  If you are streaming TV or movies, you can work on your grip strength or practice holding your breath longer !  Some highly recommended podcasts are: https://mastersofscale.com/ https://mastersofscale.com/rapidresponse/ https://www.jordanharbinger.com/ https://darknetdiaries.com/ https://cloud.withgoogle.com/cloudsecurity/podcast/

Childhood development: athleticism

In the last post, we discussed developing the mind with reading and STEM disciplines. In this post, we are going to continue the theme of childhood development; the body, specifically athletic capabilities. Remember though, although ideal to start early on, it’s never too late to start any of this!  Five sports and activities to get into, and should be life-long are: Stretching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ( https://www.gracieuniversity.com/ or https://www.10thplanetjj.com/ or https://artofjiujitsu.com/ or https://renzogracieacademy.com/ or https://bjjfanatics.com/ ) Running Hiking Calisthenics/body workout

Childhood development: the MIND

Ideally, gaining hard skills, soft skills, knowledge, and abilities starts at a young age and is a lifelong journey. The more time you have to practice and improve, the better. However, the saying “better late than never” applies here and it’s encouraged to pick something you are interested in, learn it, apply it, and practice!  We are going to start this post with childhood development, specifically development of the mind. Reading and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) academic disciplines are imperative! These disciplines provide a solid foundation and huge advantage in a professional career.  Reading is the basis to learn all things. Reading gives one the potential to learn anything on their own. From reading, any other knowledge can be gained. Sure, it’s not the only way to learn, one can also learn through mentoring, classes, watching videos, but knowing how to read provides the greatest potential with the smallest barriers. Think of all the knowledge that...
